Hi Babes! It’s been a long time since I have written and I am super excited about this topic! Today is all about Capsule Wardrobes! A few weeks ago I reached out to you all and asked if you knew what a capsule wardrobe was and I was happy to see all of you reach out for tips on how to create yours. So without further ado, let’s break down how to create your own capsule wardrobe!
What is a Capsule Wardrobe?
A Capsule Wardrobe consists of 25-50 pieces of clothing, shoes, and accessories. Some swear by the number 33, but everyone’s capsule varies. My Fall capsule is about 35 pieces. Outerwear and swimwear do count towards pieces in your capsule however, underwear, loungewear, and workout wear typically do not. The exception to these pieces being included in your capsule would be if loungewear and workout wear were part of your everyday looks. Each capsule lasts about 3 months, which is why most refer to them as seasonal.
The Capsule Wardrobe is all about being minimalistic; the idea is to live with less. What does this mean? No shopping sprees for pieces we are going to wear one time and never look at again (yes, I am incredibly guilty of this). Your capsule should consist of clothing you like and feel good in. By developing a capsule wardrobe from your go to pieces you can cut your time needed to get ready from 30 minutes to 3! There are no hard or fast rules to this process, do what works best for you.
Starting Your Capsule Wardrobe
Start with classic, neutral basics that you can mix, match and reuse. For example, my basics consist of black and white t-shirts as well as black and white turtlenecks. You can build on this with basic colored sweaters and cardigans as well. Once you have all your basics complete, you’ll throw in a few statement pieces to inject your personality into your wardrobe. You should also remember to leave a little wiggle room to bring in seasonal and on trend items (jackets, outerwear, swimwear, etc.) A good rule of thumb when choosing base and accent colors is to make sure your pieces coordinate enough in color and style to mix and match frequently.
Let’s Start Building
To begin the building process, pick your top 1-4 pieces from the following categories: pants, jeans, skirts, dresses, tees, jewelry, dressy tops, sweaters, blazers, swim/outerwear, shoes, and accessories. Depending on the season and your style your capsule for the mentioned categories will vary and therefore you will be able to coordinate extra pieces into categories that best work for you and your lifestyle. Out of my 35-piece Capsule Wardrobe I was able to create 186 outfits! Yes, you read that correctly. This doesn’t even include my outerwear and accessories! The key to having this many options is to choose items that can be mixed and matched easily! Below is the breakdown of my Fall Capsule Wardrobe.
